A Complete Guide for D-Link ADSL Modem Router Setup

You must know these tricks as in modern operating systems other than Windows XP, the software disc provided with the modem will not be very helpful during configuration.

Broadly, the process of configuration can be divided into four major stages as mentioned below.

1.       Interface Login

2.       ATM Configuration

3.       WAN Configuration

4.       Wi-Fi Configuration

Let us see each of these stages in detail.

1. Interface Login

First of all, launch the web browser and then type 192.168.1.1 since you are using a D-Link modem.

In the next moment, a login box will appear where you have to enter in both fields as ‘admin.’

Once you complete the process, you will be able to login and get another page showing the current status. In the case of new modems that are going for first-time installation, the uplink and downlink speeds may not be present. You should not be bothered about that because they will come when you will configure the modem.

Now you have to select “Advanced” setting appearing in the left side menu. It will take you to the interface where you will perform further actions.

2. ATM Configuration

In the second stage first click on ‘Add’ button appearing on the DSL ATM configuration page. It will redirect you to a new page. The users, who don’t know the VPI or VCI, should search it online on their mobile before moving further as putting in inappropriate values won’t help you in connecting the modem to WAN.

Now select path0,EOA, mode-LLC/BRIDGING/SNAP. It varies in most of the cases and depends on the type of firmware.

In the present case, it is LLC/SNAP/BRIDGED.

Now set Qos scheduler as your priority.

Now click “Next.” It will take you to a new page for further operations.

3. WAN Configuration

Next you have to click on WAN interface within the advanced settings. Now you will reach to a new page.

Now click on “Add” to move further.

Now click “Next.”

Now you have to select “pppoe,” if you want the modem to be on irrespective of the desktop status. It allows you to use the Internet on your laptops as well as Wi-Fi devices.

You have to select bridge mode if you want to use the Internet only when the desktop PC is on, or when you have dialed the connection from PC. You must note here that no devices will be able to connect to the Internet unless you dial from your desktop.

Now click “Next.” It takes you to another window. You may require filling in the information provided by your service providers such as username and password.

Next you have to enable firewall for better security. You may consider disabling the firewall if you want high speed in torrents.

You are advised not to enable manual MTU.

Don’t enable PPP IP extension.

You are not required to do much on this page unless you want a different DNS.

Now click “Next.”

Now click “Apply/Save.” It will redirect you to a new page. Now everything is over for WAN configuration. You would be able to see the Internet light blinking after waiting for a few seconds.

In case you see a red Internet indicator then probably the combination of your username and password in not correct. If the internet light is not blinking then, you should contact your service provider to check if everything is alright from their end.

4. Wireless Configuration

You have almost completed the process.

Now select the “Wireless” tab appearing on the left and select basic settings.

Next enable wireless, change your country, select “Security” tab and then finally click “Apply/Save.”

Wireless Configuration Select Security tab only if you want to assign a password. If you don’t assign a password, your connection will be available for all users.

If you want to give a password, select network authentication as WPA-Personal.

Now enter a password at the designated place. You can use it as your password for the network.

Finally, click “Apply/Save.”

After performing the above steps, you have successfully completed your DLink router setup. This tutorial has been designed by assuming that you know and understand what is modem and router.
